From Good To Great
An Insider's Look at MEMCOGLOBAL, INC.
By Bill Hultquist, Business Consultant

In his best-selling book, Good to Great , author Jim Collins sums up what it takes for a company to achieve its full potential. He writes -

"The essential strategic difference between the good-to-great and good companies lay in two fundamental distinctions. First, the good-to-great companies founded their strategies on a deep understanding along three key dimensions, namely:
> What you can be the best in the world at
> What drives your economic engine
> What are you deeply passionate about?
Second, the good-to-great companies translated that understanding into a simple, crystalline concept that guided all their efforts, their strategic competitive advantage." *

I have had the privilege of working with a number of organizations on their way to greatness. What I have consistently found is that a company can only attain and sustain the highest levels of performance when it has both an outstanding leader and a staff of dedicated employees who are totally invested in accomplishing the company's mission day after day. Ideal as this may sound - it is not that difficult to achieve.

MEMCOGLOBAL, INC. offers an excellent example of all of these principles in action. Not only does it fulfill each of the conditions described above, it also centers its success on what might be described as 'enlightened self-interest.' Since its inception in 1990, MEMCOGLOBAL, INC. has been 'doing well by doing good' - an essential, old-fashioned concept that is often overlooked when an exclusive focus on the bottom line obscures a company's greater vision.

MemcoGlobal's Path to Greatness

Passion : MemcoGlobal,Inc. founder, Rodney Memmott, was born into an industry that is notorious for its pollution, lack of regulation and the vulnerability of the building owner to varying levels of quality.

Memmott did not always like the roofing business. Now, however, he loves it – especially roof rehabilitation projects – because “we can take something that's worn and spent and turn it into something that's functional and even beautiful.”

Memmott is passionate about helping to change the way roofing is practiced in the world today. He is even more passionate about living his principles by serving others with heart and integrity.

He fulfills his vision every day through everything he does because living in this manner brings him pleasure as well as prosperity. Given that most people look upon roofing as a 'necessary evil,' Memmott says, " if we can make it a painless experience - or memorable in a positive way - it makes us feel good about who we are and what we do."

Unrivaled Excellence : Over the last 16 years, Memmott has been creating a quiet revolution in the way that roofing is done. By mastering the latest in eco-friendly technologies he has developed processes that make it possible to extend the life of a roof indefinitely - thereby preserving his clients' resources along with the environment. As a result of Memmott's conviction and dedication, MemcoGlobal has become the best in the business of sustaining the life of a roof for years beyond industry standards.

Economic Engine : Until now, the engine that has driven MemcoGlobal,Inc. success has been the outstanding quality of its project management and its extremely high levels of customer service. In the fall of 2006, the company “revved up” its economic engine and increased its visibility by offering a whole new level of service to the owner/managers of multiple facilities all across the country.

Through its new division, RoofHelpusa (www.RoofHelpusa.com), commercial, industrial and institutional facility managers now have instant access to highly qualified roofing contractors 24/7 for emergency leak repairs. If the service technician performing the repairs recommends additional work, MemcoGlobal's technical staff will review their report and will render a second opinion with an eye toward saving the client money.

Fueling the Competition : As Memmott points out, “Over 50% of all commercial and institutional properties are prematurely re-roofed.” To help put an end to this wasteful practice, MemcoGlobal is currently sharing its proprietary cost-saving waterproofing techniques with select roofing professionals across the nation.

Memmott's company will also be sharing the Internal Quality Management principles that can enable a company to help its employees fulfill their potential - for the benefit of everyone involved. One of the principle beneficiaries of this paradigm shift in the roofing industry will be the customer - whose roofing assets will gain the strength and durability to last much longer and will cost much less to maintain.
